How National Muffin Day Works
- Bake muffins to acknowledge people experiencing homelessness (in previous years, we gave them out, but this year please do what you’re comfortable with).
- Post publicly on social media with #givemuffins.
- Consider donating to an important homelessness cause near you. Call ahead to ensure they accept food donations. Let us know via the Muffin Meter!
For every Muffinteer who posts on social media, we donate to the nonprofits Project Homeless Connect and Family Promise. In past years, others have matched this donation! This year, will it be you?
*since we’re lawyers, donations subject to a cap if this really goes viral.
How to be a Muffinteer
Any super volunteer who bakes muffins will be officially dubbed a Muffinteer. We have a fun Facebook group for Muffinteers to share recipes, articles and tips. Join us. Here’s a helpful guide to baking on your own or hosting a party!
How will National Muffin Day be different in 2023?
This year, like everything else, National Muffin Day continues to be different. If you feel safe, you can host a baking party and hand out muffins on the street, but most organizations are accepting homemade food. Please be careful and wear masks.
1. Bake muffins!
- This year, we invite you to bake independently or with your household.
- For those who are comfortable to host small muffin baking parties, please do so in a way that ensures everybody feels safe. After all, baking muffins is more fun with (vaccinated, boosted, and negative-tested) friends and family.
- Please maintain healthy caution; as much as we love large community baking parties, this year we advise against them.
- We will be hosting a virtual bake-a-long party at 1:00pm PT/4:00pm ET. Register!
2. Donate to a Worthy Cause! We encourage Muffinteers to make a donation.
- Give whatever you are comfortable with or if you can, start by “giving a dozen” — in $12 increments to symbolize the muffin tin! Let us know via the Muffin Meter!
- Give to a cause that benefits people experiencing homelessness. We have our suggestions of course and encourage you to do research to see how you can support local. Join our community fundraisers:
- Family Promise is an incredible organization that establishes projects benefiting unhoused and at-risk folks in different cities across the country. Donate Here!
- Project Homeless Connect provides a ton of necessary services for people experiencing homelessness in San Francisco. If you need help finding a cause, please reach out — we know of a bunch. Jacob has been working with the Awesome Foundation: Homelessness chapter that is full of interesting and worthy causes.
3. Share on Social Media and We’ll Match by Muffinteers! Post pictures of your muffins and baking buddies publicly on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter with the hashtag #givemuffins, or to our Facebook event.
- For each person who bakes muffins and donates to a cause, we will donate $5 to Family Promise and Project Homeless Connect, with potential matching from family and corporate donors.
- If you’re willing to share, we’d like to measure our collective impact with the Muffin Meter!
Give A Dozen
We suggest giving in increments of $12 (in honor of the muffin tin), if you are able to do so. Here’s a look at your potential impact:
- $12 provides a few pairs of socks to people experiencing homelessness. Socks are a much needed clothing item to keep people warm
- $24 provides a healthy meal, hygiene materials, and basic needs for participants visiting Project Homeless Connect’s Every Day Connect drop in programs
- $48 covers five DMV IDs for participants
- $72 offers a series of job counseling sessions
- $96 gives two pairs of prescription glasses
- $125 provides a sleeping bag coat from Empowerment Plan
